Seven letters arranged in a honeycomb, one of them in the middle. Build as many words as you can from those letters, four letters or longer, and every word has to use the middle one. Letters repeat as often as you like, so a set holding A, R and T gives you tartar as readily as it gives you rat — except rat is three letters and does not count.

Somewhere in every set is a pangram: a word using all seven letters at once. It is worth a large bonus and finding it is usually the moment a puzzle opens up, because it confirms which letters actually combine. Short words earn a point, longer ones earn their length, and the ranks from Good Start up to Genius are set by the day's total rather than a fixed score, so a rich set of letters asks more of you than a sparse one.

Everyone gets the same seven letters each day, and the score is not a single sitting: most people find a handful, leave, and come back with three more. Words outside the day's list still count as bonuses if they are real, so knowing an unusual word is rewarded rather than rejected.

Tips to win

• Shuffle whenever you stall: the same seven letters read completely differently in another arrangement
• Hunt the pangram early — it is the biggest single score and it tells you which letters pair well
• Work through prefixes and suffixes systematically: -ing, -ed, -er and re- turn one word you have found into three more
• A repeated letter is free. Sets with a double vowel usually hide more words than they look like they do
