Math & Number Games

Numbers without the homework feeling. Solve order-of-operations challenges, merge number tiles and race your own best times. Every game here runs instantly in the browser, making mental arithmetic feel like play instead of drill.

Number games for every level

This category covers two quite different kinds of game. Arithmetic games test calculation directly: solve sums against the clock, work through the order of operations, or race an opponent to the right answer. Number puzzles use numbers as the pieces of a puzzle rather than as sums to work out. The best known is 2048, in which you slide numbered tiles around a grid and two tiles of the same value merge into one tile worth their total.

The first kind sharpens mental arithmetic. The second is closer to a logic puzzle, where the numbers matter mainly for how they combine.

Getting better at 2048

2048 looks random, but it rewards a consistent strategy. The most reliable one is to keep your highest tile in a corner and never move it out. Choose a corner, then use mostly two or three directions so that the big tile stays pinned in place; moving in the fourth direction is what drags it into the middle of the board, where it blocks everything else.

Build a chain along the edge beside that corner, with values falling away from it, so that merges can travel down the chain towards the big tile. And keep the board as empty as you can. Every merge frees a space, and a full board with no possible merges is how the game ends.

Improving your mental arithmetic

In calculation games, speed comes from a few habits rather than raw talent. Break awkward sums into round numbers: work out 48 plus 37 as 50 plus 35. Multiply by ten and adjust instead of multiplying by nine or eleven directly. And for order-of-operations puzzles, deal with brackets first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction; most mistakes come from simply working left to right.

Who these games suit

Number puzzles such as 2048 suit anyone who enjoys planning, and you do not need to be quick at arithmetic to play them well. Arithmetic games are a fast way to keep mental maths sharp. For puzzles that feel similar without the numbers, try the logic puzzles, including our daily Sudoku.
