About Candle Toss

A birthday cake spins above you. Tap to toss a candle up into it; it sticks into the edge of the cake wherever the edge happens to be when it arrives. Put in all the candles the cake needs and the next cake comes along — but land a candle right next to one that's already there and it bounces off, and the run is over.

Early cakes turn steadily. Later ones speed up, slow down and change direction, and some come with candles already in them, so the free stretches of edge get narrower and the moment to throw gets harder to judge. Cherries sit on the rim of some cakes: land a candle beside one to pick it up.

Scoring is a point a candle, three a cherry and five for every finished cake. The daily run is the same for everyone — the same cakes, spinning the same way — and free play starts a new run whenever you like.

Tips to win

• Watch the gap, not the candles: throw as a wide stretch comes round to the bottom
• A candle takes a moment to fly, so throw a touch before the gap arrives
• When the cake is about to turn back, wait for the turn
• Cherries are worth three candles — go for them when it's safe
