You control a cucumber that can change colour as you move through cave levels. The goal in each level is to reach the exit, usually by clearing a path or activating mechanisms that respond only to a specific colour. Press a key to cycle the cucumber's colour, and then touch matching obstacles, switches, or enemies to neutralise them. The game responds immediately: a red cucumber can pass through red barriers, a blue one activates blue platforms, and so on. Moving into an obstacle of the wrong colour costs a life or sends you back to a checkpoint.
The challenge comes from deciding when to switch colours while moving. Later levels add moving platforms, enemies that chase you, and sequences where you must change colour mid-jump. Some levels hide secret recipes that unlock bonus areas or alternate exits. The Buddy Rocket appears in certain sections, letting you fly over gaps but requiring precise colour timing to steer. The puzzle is never about raw reflexes alone; you must read each room and plan a route before committing to a colour.
