Dinosaur Dig lets the player act as a paleontologist across a series of excavation sites. At each location, the player uses tools like a brush and pick to remove dirt and rock, gradually exposing fossilized bones. Once uncovered, bones are cleaned of remaining debris and then moved to an assembly area where they snap together into a complete dinosaur skeleton. The game provides visual feedback as dirt crumbles, bones emerge, and the skeleton takes shape.

The appeal lies in the variety of activities and the gentle learning curve. Stages alternate between digging, finding small fossil fragments, cleaning delicate bones, and solving simple puzzles. As the player progresses across the map, new sites unlock with more complex skeletons and trickier hiding spots. The game is relaxed and forgiving, suitable for children but still engaging for casual players through the introduction of new tools and larger dinosaurs.
